Automation Tab Redesign.

About this project

The automation tab is arguably one of Shrimpy's most important features. It allows users to optimize their portfolio. On this tab, you can create custom indexes, curate the perfect portfolio, and enable smart rebalancing strategies.

What's going on here?

With our business intelligence data analyst, I outlined the general path of the automation flow. In reviewing the analytics data of the tab, we found a huge issue. There is a huge drop-off in the flow between viewing the automation's tab and actually creating an automation. The completion rate of this flow was quite low. In remote user tests, it was clear that there was a lot of confusion in creating an automation, specifically due to the visual hierarchy of the layout.

Before the redesign

A confusing design.

The automations tab is the most complicated tab to use. It has a ton of features, but they are unclear and unorganized. Shrimpy's app expanded very quickly, which unfortunately lead to a piecemeal approach to their design. New features were tacked on haphazardly, resulting in an automation flow that is quite confusing.

Pieces of the puzzle.

Low / Med Wireframes

The biggest design flaw with the original layout was a poor visual hierarchy.

The canvas and components backgrounds were all white with very little visual separation. Because of this, it is hard to determine which actions to take at a glance.

Also, there is a lack of titling and separation between groups of actions. This causes frustration. What am I looking at? What do I do? What to do next?

I added more space and less overwhelm by moving the saved automations column and related actions to it's own page entirely. This allowed for more room to automate.

High Fidelity

Automations done right.

Establishing a clear hierarchy, demanding white space, and adding titles drastically improved the usability of this application. Time will speak volumes about the improvements in regards to analytics, but for now, test users are understanding and enjoying the experience a lot more.
